Catalogue of the English Found
Why a Catalogue of the English Fund ?Perhaps not everybody knows that since the second half of the 19th century Bordighera hosted an English community (to have information on the volume at the side, click on the title of the book) which also gave birth to the first nucleus of the International Municipal Library (1883).
Furnished with a few volumes, the Library's first location was the Anglican Church (click on the picture) and then the Bicknell Museum.
Finally in 1910 the Library had its own location on the Via Romana. Later, in 1985, the building was completely restored, leaving the inside unchanged. Nowadays there are 70,000 volumes in the Library. About 22,000 are in English and come from the Victorian Period. This equipment (the English Fund) puts the Library of Bordighera in first place in its genre.
In 1996, thanks to the Commission for Culture, the works were catalogued and put on CD-ROM which is at the disposal of the libraries interested. But now, thanks to the technology of TOOLNET - ROSENET S. a. s., you can consult on-line the CD-ROM at www.bordighera.it
Check the catalogue for the English volumes you are interested in. The books are then available at the International Municipal Library (opening hours) with the following formalities: a) Interlibrary loan; b) Loan to a person enroled at the Municipal Library of Bordighera (for fiction only); c) Consultation in the Library for the other books.
